After a careful examination of a frozen section of the lump, the pathologist would then tell the surgeon what to do— either make sure the whole lump was removed, if the diagnosis was benign (non-cancerous), or remove the entire breast, all of the muscles below the breast and the lymph nodes of the axilla (the armpit) if the diagnosis was cancer.
