Filosofía política I. Ideas políticas y movimientos sociales

He reminded the king of the community’s services to the Crown during the conquest and assured Charles V of their future services. With this strategic and well-crafted argument, Governor Maxixcatzin asked Charles V to grant Tlaxcala a coat of arms and the title La Leal Ciudad de Tlaxcala (Loyal City of Tlaxcala). To reinforce the relationship of the city to the Crown, he also requested a mandate that ensured that Tlaxcala would never be alienated from the Crown. 32 Auspiciously, Governor Maxixcatzin’s stay on the Iberian peninsula coincided with the final negotiations between the Council of the Indies and the newly appointed viceroy of New Spain, Don Antonio de Mendoza, Conde de Tendilla.

Scholars on both sides of the border thus became more concerned with epistemology and the politics of representations. These themes underlie historical writings such as the essays in this volume. 17 Notes 1. I acknowledge helpful insights and suggestions from Ethelia Ruiz, John Hart, Rebecca Horn, Matthew Restall, and Yanna Yannakakis.
